Interns in Barcelona

By Adil Gzouny

I am studying International Business and Management Studies at HvA/HES and I am currently doing my internship In Barcelona. One thing was sure and that is that I had to do my internship abroad and not in The Netherlands. Finding this internship was surprisingly easy to find on the internet, even though I did had difficulties in the beginning to know in which country I wanted to do my placement.

I am assistant manager of a company called BCN Loft that offers short term accommodation throughout the city center of Barcelona. The leading language is English, so Spanish is not a must but it does help if you speak Spanish. My job consists of delegating duties to all staff member and insuring that service is provided to guests. Also responsible for handling emails, complaints and building contact with partners. I am also starting a small marketing project which I will be leading.

I knew that it is only during my studies that i would have the chance to gain experience and knowledge on studying/working abroad. Being in Barcelona has really made me understand how culture has a big influence in the international business world. We learn business from teachers that most of the time know only one culture. We gain that experience from them, but to experience it and learn more is by actually working abroad.

Spain (Catalunya) is a great place to be. Barcelona offers such a wide culture differences that it might surprise you in the beginning, like it did to me. I had difficulties settling in the beginning, but after one week I was feeling at home. Especially when you have colleagues that are doing their internship in the same company does help.

I know that usually finding accommodation is a big issue but I, fortunately, had no problems due to the fact that my company offers rooms in two apartments for their interns. I still have to pay rent, but it does save me the hassle of finding an apartment. But I know it is difficult to find affordable accommodation in an area that will also give you the chance of getting to know the city. Momentary I live in an quarter called Raval. It's close to the city centre, the rents are low and there is a lot of distraction. What I would advice, for finding accommodation. is to come to Barcelona, stay in a hostel for a couple of days and then go find an apartment. But it is better to know where to look before coming, it will save you time and money.

Barcelona does offer a huge nightlife with a lot of choices of bars, restaurants, cafes and clubs. Although you will never get bored in this city, it is quite expensive. Therefore going for local cafes, bars and restaurants does save you money and gain you knowledge in getting to know both the city and the people.

Finally I do feel lucky that I was able to do my internship in a city where its always sunny and where Spaniards always challenge you with their fats Spanish. I got to learn Spanish, got to get to know new people, make new friends from all over the world (which can also mean business connections for my future) and got to have fun and explore my limits.
