About the case
Amsterdam Overamstel
The case and plan area for the Consultancy Week of 2007 have already been determined. Situated on the Amstel in the south of Amsterdam lies an area that in roughly 50 years time transformed from a polder landscape into the ‘Amstel Business Park’. The destination of the plan area has for many years been industrial. Both the sewerage company (RWZI) and NUON, which is located on the location of the former ‘Zuidergasfabriek’, have been present here for years. At this moment Overamstel is mainly used for functions such as companies and offices. The city of Amsterdam has been working on developing and executing plans for the area since the late 1980s. The decision in 2000 to relocate the sewerage company to Westpoort in effect started the discussion about transforming the area.
The main assignment facing the plan area of Overamstel will be the transformation of a traditional work area to a mixed-use metropolitan work and residential area.
Main Objectives
In order to successfully implement this transformation the Department of Spatial Planning of the Amsterdam City Council has formulated the following four starting points in the Vision for Overamstel to which all plans must adhere:
1. Fitting in with rest of city
2. Preservation of good accessibility
3. Mixing of working and living functions
4. Maintaining flexibility
Adding residences in a work area demands a mixing strategy which on one hand offers the room to further develop and intensify the industrial funcions, whilst also creating an attractive living environment with enough facilities.
